In orign they were three, daughters of Zeus and Mnemosyne, later nine Muses, associated with Apollo were:Calliope: Muse of Epic Peotry. Her symbols are tablet and stylus, a roll of paper and a clock around her waist. Clio: Muse of History. Her symbols are an open roll of paper or an open chest of books.
Eutherpes: Muse of lyric Poetry. Her symbols are a flute,sometimes she's reciting lyric poetry.Melpomene: Muse of Tragedy. Her symbol is a tragic mask,, sometime carries sword or club.

Terphsicore:Muse of Dance and Choral song, her symbols is a Lyre plucked with a plectrum.
Erato: Muse of erotic Poetry. Depicted also with a Lyre.Polymnia: Muse of the Hymn. Her symbols are a roll and robe, depicted in a pensive pose. Urania: Muse of Astronomy. Her symbols are a Globe and a Staff to point the stars out. Thalia: Muse of Comedy. Her symbol is a comic mask.
